Shortly
after purchasing my first manual camera, I discovered the bulb
setting and fell in love with long exposure photography. My maiden
attempts involved trying to write my name on the negative with
the moon as my pen. I’ve always been most excited and at
peace while out-of-doors. So it followed that nature was the theme
in many of my early works.
Given
that photography is essentially painting with light, I take it
one step further by combining my love for nature with long exposures.
Subjects and locations are selected to achieve optimal lighting
conditions. The main light source of choice in the images is pre-dawn
sky light. Then, with a steady hand, the subjects are highlighted,
which leaves voids where intended darkness is desired. Quite literally,
I paint the scene with a luminescent brush stroke. This lighting
technique has recently transitioned over to photographing human
figure studies.
I
have chosen the digital camera as my instrument, and although
there are many options to manipulate images, the focus of creativity
is achieved while the shutter is open. All of the images are printed
with archival inks on archival paper.
In
mid 2004, a gallery in the Philadelphia suburbs sponsored my debut.
This successful show opened the doors to two other galleries for
my work in November. It is a fervent hope to have audiences view
the images through my eyes and to feel my passions for painting
with light.
