Photographer: Ed Reindle

Ed Reindle was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. In 1952, he graduated from Simon Gratz High School. After working in the city for two years, he attended West Chester State College where he majored in Health and Physical Education. After graduating from West Chester, he obtained a position in the Exeter Township School District, which is located near Reading, PA, where he taught Science, Physical Education, Health, and eventually, served as a Guidance Counselor until his retirement in 1993. In all, he was employed by the Exeter school district for 35 years.

In 1969, while on a sabbatical leave, he received a degree in counseling from the University of New Mexico. While in New Mexico, Ed and his wife, Grace, traveled and camped extensively. It was during this time that Ed was captivated by the extraordinary natural surroundings of the “Land of Enchantment”. Although he had, for many years, been interested in photography as a form of record keeping, it was in New Mexico that the idea of photography as an art form began to intrigue him. After returning from New Mexico during the summer of 1970, Ed became a member of the Berks Camera Club where he learned the rudiments of darkroom work. Since that time, Ed has developed a style of photographic printing, which is, in some respects, unique. He eschews the avant-garde school of photography yet his quest for simplicity in his photography has directed him to a novel perception of common objects, especially in his renditions of tree stumps, which he captures in both the harshness of winter and the softness of fall. All of his stump photographs were made in or near Pennsylvania’s Promised Land State Park, which is located in the Pocono Mountains. Ed claims to have an intimate knowledge of every stump in the area. Whether this is true or not, he has been able to draw from this mundane subject matter a kind of stark and delicate beauty, a rendition of shade and lines which suggests extraordinary pencil work as well as a certain sensuality which is probably unlike work done by any other photographer.

In the last few years, Ed has turned to the paintbrush to produce photographic renditions of various subjects, particularly, but not exclusively, landscapes. His inspiration for such work was the preliminary sketches of the Pennsylvania artist, Andrew Wyeth – sketches Ed found appealing in and of themselves as a distinctive form of art. In his own work, Ed paints developer on the latent image and attempts to control the flow of developer on the photographic paper until he acquires the hoped for results. This is a challenging procedure, which results in frequent errors and discarded paper. Every successful print, however, is a unique endeavor – no two are alike – a result of the constant flow of developer across the paper.
Ed’s photography has received numerous awards over the years. At the Bethlehem Sidewalk Art Show in 1982, his work was recognized as “Best of Show”, an award never before – or since – presented to a photographer. He has won frequent first place awards in photography as well as other “Best of Show” awards.
